About two weeks ago, on a burst of spontaneity, I booked a flight to Atlanta. Just for the day. The catalyst for the trip was an author I followed was hosting a book release and I simply wanted to attend and just knew I'd have an amazing time. A friend had recently convinced me of the wonders of one day flights to and back and I'd never done it, so here was my chance. I gladly booked and was beyond excited.  Coming into the year, I had no travel plans, which is unusual for me; instead I would travel organically, taking trips whenever opportunities presented themselves. Once booked I began to plan the cutest little day in Atlanta.

Here was the plan:

  • Arrive by 9am
  • Breakfast at the Atlanta Breakfast Club
  • Bicentennial Park
  • MLK Historic Area
  • Piedmont Park and the Atlanta Botanical Garden
  • Lunch at Joy's Café
  • High Museum
  • Posman Books
  • The Morgan Harper Nichols book event
  • Dinner
  • Airport and Home

Cute plan right? It makes me happy just writing it up. A day in a different city doing all the things I love. Unfortunately, the trip was almost a disaster! I had some inclination that things may not be as cute and cozy as I'd prefer. The weather was forecasted to be in the 30s and that's where it was when I landed that Saturday morning. 30s and snowing! Luckily, I dressed appropriately, donning a thick denim jeans, layered over some tights; a cute pink blouse covered with my heaviest and chicest winter coat. With my toes comfortably socked in my tennis shoes I started off on my little adventure.

Here's what happened:

  • Arrived at 9
  • Breakfast at the Atlanta Breakfast Club
    • Ordered the Chicken and Black Pepper Gravy; I think Jesus made this himself; I wanted to LICK the plate clean!!!
  • Bicentennial Park & CNN Building
  • MLK Historic Area
  • Atlanta Botanical Garden
  • Joy's Café
    • Farm Fresh Omelettes. Simple and delicious
  • High Museum
  • Posman Books and Ponce City Market
  • The event was CANCELLED!!!
  • Airport and back to sunny Miami

As a Miami girl visiting for the day I was excited about the snow. Sadly, snow is unusual in those areas, which was news to me, and it was unexpected. Roads were closed and the event naturally, could not go on for safety reason. I was truly disappointed. I mean this was the main reason I flew in and I was crushed. Fortunately, I was able to do almost everything I had planned, the weather did make it difficult, it was just so cold. Despite my disappointment I did my best to make the most of the day. I am proud of that, but I was so happy to get back to the airport, the day was long.

I would definitely do another day trip; I'm looking forward to going back to Atlanta just for the food and a sunnier walk through the parks and gardens. The botanical garden was a dream, even in the dreary weather. The museum was worthy as well. Overall, I loved this little trip. No, it didn't go as planned, but I could've been so down when I learned about the cancellation, but instead I pushed through and made the most of what I was given. I'm happy with that.

Faithfully,

Marie
